Childhood Kidney Cancer
The Problem:
Often called “the disease you've never heard of” childhood kidney cancer (pediatric renal cancer) is the 4th most common childhood cancer overall. It comes in a number of forms although Nephroblastoma (commonly known as Wilms) is by far the most prevalent and affects 93% of all cases. Childhood kidney cancer has a good survival rate if detected early but many children sadly go undiagnosed for years and face extensive, life-threatening treatment and even death.
Fast facts:
The 4th most common childhood cancer overall The #1 type of kidney cancer in children (93%) 9/10 childhood kidney cancers are Wilms 55% of those diagnosed are already stage 2-5 30-45% survival rate for diffuse anaplastic Wilms 7,500 children a year suffer from kidney cancer in North America 190,000 children a year suffer from kidney cancer worldwide
The Vision:
The Wilms Cancer Foundation (WCF) is a charitable organization that supports and represents the needs of children, families, and healthcare organizations affected by childhood kidney cancer. We are the only charitable organization worldwide explicitly focusing on the disease, and we are a leader in childhood kidney cancer information and care. We are led by a scientific advisory board of the leading pediatric renal (kidney cancer) oncologists from North America, the United Kingdom, Europe, and Latin America.
Mission:
To establish an international program of awareness, education, advocacy, early detection, treatment, and support for children, families, and healthcare organizations tackling childhood kidney cancer on a daily basis.

How we Help
Awareness and Education:
Problem: Lack of awareness leads to late detection and high mortality rates. 55% of children diagnosed already at stage 2-5. Solution: Universal screening and collaboration across the healthcare sector to increase early detection and reduce mortality rates.
Support:
Problem: Treatment can be protracted (sometimes lasting years) and is often far from home, leading to unemployment, depression, bankruptcy, etc. Solution: Delivering emotional/financial support to offset socioeconomic problems.
Research/Treatment Drain:
Problem: Treating late stage diagnosis costs healthcare organizations $800K/year (per child), seriously impacting annual healthcare budgets. Solution: Increasing early detection by investing in clinical trials/research decreases the burden on healthcare and saves lives.
